Lords of the Ring, Bojanglez Niteclub, Guildford 24th February 2002
Event Report by Jesse Saunders This was the first joint venture for Gary Turner and Jesse Saunders and as it turned out, was an incredible success. Under the name of Lords of the Ring, the tournament attracted an amazing amount of attention, probably, in part due to the fact that Guildford has not had anything like this for a very long time. The venue was Bojanglez Nite Club, which was full to it’s capacity of 750, with another 200 plus queuing outside who unfortunately did not get in to see the top quality Thai and kickboxing. The sponsors of the show were EAS, MET-Rx, Maximus Gym (Now the New Budokan Gym) in Frimley and GNC in Guildford. 1. The first fight of the evening was between Imran Shah from KO Gym and Mohindoor Paul from East Area Thai, a full Thai fight at 56kg. In the first round, Shah came out the more aggressor, catching Paul with some good low kicks and punches. In the clinch, both fighters showed good technique. The second round started how the first had finished, with both fighters showing some good clinch work. Shah caught Paul with a left jab, right low kick combination. Paul retaliated with a good right hand flush on the jaw which Shah took very well. In the third, Paul was starting to look the more tired of the two. Shah was starting to get the upper hand in the clinch although one knee to the back of Paul, resulted in Shah getting a stern telling off from the ref. Winner
: Imran Shah - Points.

caught Heron with a left hook which opened up a cut above the right eye. The
Doctor was called and he decided that Heron could not continue. This was a sad

very hard and sharp punches. Carr to her credit, tried to fight back with some
good low kicks but they just seemed to have no effect on Burton. Every punch
that Burton threw was connecting. Carrs corner very sensibly threw in the towel

Jackson showed tremendous courage in getting up to his feet, but he did look a little unsteady. It was then all
Trefry as he rained punches on Jackson, but luckily for Jackson, the bell rang
to end the first round. When the fighters
came out for the second round, Jackson did not look like he had recovered from
the earlier round. Trefy was picking his shots and as Jackson was backing off in

it was obvious that Riley was good with her hands whilst Pullen preferred her
legs. Riley landed with some fast 1-2s and Pullen was countering with good
roundhouse kicks to the midsection. In the second round,
the action got faster, if that was possible! Both fighters landed good
combinations with Pullens legs catching Riley. Pullen was starting to look the
stronger, pushing Riley on to the backfoot. When the bell sounded for the end of
the round, the crowd showed there appreciation with thunderous applause. From the bell, Riley

took it well. Winner : Conrad Ivegbe- Points

The Ninth fight was for the BMTA British Lightwelter Weight Title between
Suleman Raja from Woking Thai
and Lakvinder Sekhon from
Raja Naresuan. The crowd were really up for this fight especially as Raja being the home fighter. At the opening bell, it was all action with Raja in his normal mood of enjoying a war. Sekhon tried to trade punches with Raja, but Raja was the better boxer, slipping everything he threw and then landing some very hard shots on the chin. With the round only 30 seconds old, Sekhon found himself on the canvas. He gamely got up at the count of 8 but it was only a matter of time. Raja just couldn’t
miss and after about a dozen unanswered punches, the referee put a stop to the
proceedings with Sekhon in no condition to defend himself. Winner and New BMTA British Lightwelter Weight Champion : Suleman Raja - TKO 1st
10. The last fight of the evening was the BMTA British Middle Weight Title between Richard Fenwick from Woking Thai and Phil McAlpine from Bromley Thai. These two had fought
early on in their careers with Fenwick winning a points decision. McAlpine
wanted to reverse that and so the scene was set for a good fight…. And boy,
did they deliver! The first round was
reasonably quiet with both fighters feeling each other out with quick left low
kicks and push kicks. Halfway through the round, Fenwick connected with a left
uppercut, straight right combination. In
the clinch, McAlpine managed to take Fenwick to the canvas a few times. In the second,
Fenwick upped the pace but was caught with a three punch combination. As
McAlpine pressed forward, Fenwick caught him with an overhand right that put
McAlpine to the canvas for an 8 count. Fenwick piled on the pressure but
McAlpine managed to survive the round. It looked like the
effects of the knockdown had worn off as McAlpine came out very strong with some
good combinations. When the fighters got into a clinch, McAlpine seemed to be
stronger and once again, managed to throw Fenwick to the canvas. Right at the
end of the round, Fenwick came back with a good 4 punch combination. As the fourth
started, McAlpine looked visibly tired. Fenwick started to increase the pace and
was catching McAlpine with 2 or 3 punch combinations followed by some good low
kick work. It was the fifth round and the crowd were on their feet. The two warriors touched gloves and it was obvious that there was a lot of respect from both fighters. Fenwick just seemed to be getting stronger as McAlpine was getting weaker. Fenwick was really enjoying himself and catching McAlpine with some hard looking middle kicks which were taking there toll. At the final bell,
both fighters knew who had won and the crowd knew that they had witnessed a
tremendous fight with both fighters showing good skills and lots of courage. Winner and New BMTA British Middle Weight Champion : Richard Fenwick - Points
