Heike Bauer is a doctoral student at Birkbeck College, University of
London. Her thesis inverstigates the links between sexology and literature,
especially the influences between German sexology and English literary
writing, 1864-1939.
It focuses on the works of the Germans Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, Richard von
Krafft-Ebing and Magnus Hirschfeld as well as on writings by the English
sexologists John Addington Symonds and Havelock Ellis. The literary part of
the thesis includes studies of select writings by Sarah Grand, Olive
Schreiner, and Edith Lees; Oscar Wilde, Arthur Symons and Walter Pater; Sir
Richard Burton; and Radclyffe Hall.
