My book, Homosexual Desire in Revolutionary Russia: The Regulation of Sexual and Gender Dissent (Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 2001), is the first book-length study of same-sex love in modern Russia. I have also published articles and chapters about lesbians and Soviet psychiatry, male prostitution in early 20th-century Russia, homosexual identity as resistance in Stalin's Soviet Union, and queer historiography on the Soviet Union. I am currently working on a book about early Soviet forensic medicine and the limits of sexual utopianism: this book will examine Bolshevik policies and practices on sexual assault, the age of consent, and hermaphroditism. I am interested in Russian/Soviet masculinity especially as refracted through medicine.
