October 10th 2001 - Back Axle Leak

Went for the annual MOT test this morning. (For non UK readers - all cars over 3 years old have to pass an annual roadworthiness test called the MOT test. ) Passed OK. The examiner pointed out something that could become a problem later if it's not attended to. There is a small oil patch on the offside rear brake drum. He suggested that it was probably leaking from the back axle.

There is an oil seal in the hub which may need replacing. But before I pull it apart it has been suggested to me that the problem might be too much pressure inside the back axle caused by a blocked breather.  I'll check that first and report what I find. I think it's the thing marked on the diagram alongside as an air vent plug.

Also note the sound advice from the 1947 Owners Instruction Manual!
